Hello everyone! Today I have a cute drawing recipe to help you draw some cute puppies! This tutorial goes over a base to draw your puppies, and from there you can make all sorts of doggy doodles!

You can make this art on the computer, or on paper, but my tutorial images are done on digital. There will be alternate instructions for those who would like to draw these puppies on paper, but I would recommend trying digital! The result will most likely come out cleaner, and it will be much easier once you’re used to drawing digitally (It took me awhile to get used to it, but it was worth it! Try it out sometime!).

First up is the digital tutorial! To make my puppy I used an app called Adobe Illustrator (free for ios and google play!), but any basic digital art program is fine!

DIGITAL TUTORIAL
*********************************************************************************************
The particular style for these puppies is “lineless”, meaning they don’t have a border! This is to give it a popping effect, and it demonstrates good use of shading! HOWEVER, a very good color pallette is needed to have the right effect! I would recommend finding a color palette online, especially if you’re just now starting out digital art! You can find some good color palettes here.

Steps 1-5 will all be on our rough draft! First create a new layer for our base. We won’t need this layer later, but it is necessary for a good result! You can go ahead and set your opacity to 50%, or wait until Step 6 to do this.

Step 1: This is the easiest step! Draw or insert a circle onto your canvas!
Step 2: Draw ears and a snout! You can make the ears pointy, floppy, or anything in between! Also experiment with snout shapes and find what works for you!

Step 3: Draw the eyes and the floof! Your dog can be as fluffy or as smooth as you like! If you have trouble with eyes, look up different styles online and practice! It took me forever to find my style for eyes, and it’s okay to use references! Practice, practice, practice!

Step 4: Touch up your rough draft! Add whatever details you’d like! Remember, this is a rough draft, so nothing needs to be super precise! A quick planning sketch goes a long way!

Step 5: This step is optional! If you’d like, you can make a chest, body, etc. for your puppy! For the simplicity of this tutorial, I only did a chest. To make the chest, draw another circle underneath the head, and connect them with the neck. Even if your puppy is short-haired, fur is very prominent on the chest, so don’t forget to add some tufts of floof coming off the chest!

Now we’re going to make the real deal! Create another layer, and make sure it’s above your first layer! Make sure your rough draft layer is transparent if you haven’t changed it already.

Step 6: Outline the dog in it’s main base coat color. Outline important details such as the eyes, nose, and mouth! Smaller details like freckles and whiskers can be added later, so don’t worry about them for now!

Step 7: Fill it in! This step is easy if you’re on digital, just take your bucket and fill in the shape!
image7.PNG

Step 8: Color in the eyes, nose, and mouth! Try experimenting with different colors!

Step 9: Shading! I cannot stress the importance of shading enough. Especially with lineless art. It will make your art so so so much better! Even if you are unsure of your shading abilities, I strongly urge you to practice it. It will make a huge difference!

Step 10: Highlight! Highlighting doesn't take much, just add a little shine where it should be! Solid surfaces such as the eyes, nose, or tongue should be highlighted, as well as lighted places where the fur is fairly smooth. Short-haired puppies will have more highlights than long haired ones!

IMPORTANT NOTE: The dog I drew for this tutorial is a Java Chip Puppy, and is made from coffee! Liquids require a great more deal of highlighting than solids (like fur). If you'd like to see a more accurate example of how to highlight fur, check out the other puppies below!

Step 11: Details + Finishes! Add fun details, accessories, traits and more! Now is the time to give your puppy all the swag it deserves! Freckles and whiskers are classics, but feel free to shake it up! You can make your puppy a pirate, a ninja, a superhero, a warrior, anything you want! I made my dog out of coffee!
Don't forget to delete or erase your rough draft when you're done!

There you have it, a fabulous puppy of your very own! Don’t forget to sign it so nobody tries to claim their art as their own!

ALTERNATE INSTRUCTIONS FOR PAPER
*********************************************************************************
There are two ways to draw this on paper! One is by drawing a rough base dark on a sheet of paper, and then tracing over it on another sheet of paper. The other way to draw it is by drawing lightly in pencil, and erasing your rough draft when you’re done!

ALTERNATE INSTRUCTION 1
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Materials:
-2 sheets of paper (1 can be tracing paper if you choose)
-Pencil / Pen
-Medium of choice (Markers, colored pencils, paint, etc.)
-(Optional) Light Source
Step 1: Draw your rough base on the first sheet of paper. Draw it very dark so it will be visible! See steps 1-5 on the digital tutorial to see how to draw a rough draft!
Step 2: Place the second sheet of paper, or tracing paper, over the rough draft sheet. Trace the outline, eyes, nose, and mouth, etc. with your medium of choice. Don’t forget to also outline any spots, stripes, or color markings!
Step 3: Fill in the outline, leaving important things like the eyes, nose, mouth, and spots blank. It should be the same color as your outline for it to be lineless! If you’re using markers or colored pencils, be sure to draw in the direction of the fur for best results!
Step 4: Color in the eyes. nose, mouth, and fur patterns in colors of your choice!
Step 5: Shade, and add any other details to your art that you would like!
ALTERNATE INSTRUCTION 2
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Materials:
-1 sheet of paper
-Pencil / Pen
-Medium of choice (Markers, colored pencils, paint, etc.)
-(Optional) Light Source

Step 1: Draw your rough draft on your paper with pencil. Be sure to draw very lightly! See steps 1-5 in the digital tutorial to see how to draw a rough draft!

Step 2: Trace the outline, eyes, nose, and mouth, etc. with your medium of choice. Don’t forget to also outline any spots, stripes, or color markings!

Step 3: Fill in the outline, leaving important things like the eyes, nose, mouth, and spots blank. It should be the same color as your outline for it to be lineless! If you’re using markers or colored pencils, be sure to draw in the direction of the fur for best results!

Step 4: Color in the eyes. nose, mouth, and fur patterns in colors of your choice!

Step 5: Shade, and add any other details to your art that you would like!

Step 6: Erase any pencil lines left over from your rough draft!

You can make puppies however you like! I’ve included some of my other puppy designs here, if you’d like more reference for highlighting, shading, color, etc.!
