MLB opening day by Nate Gaines

After the long offseason Major League Baseball is back. After a month of spring training, the veterans file in for yet another season, and rookies who barely even made the roster dream of glory. To baseball fans, Opening Day is one of the best days of the year. There is even a petition circulating to make it a national holiday; the campaign was started by former St.Louis legend Ozzie Smith.

Opening day is even better if your team wins. Mine did-- against the hated World Series Champion rival, the Chicago Cubs. Randal Grichuk had a masterful game, going 2-4 with a go-ahead home run in the 8th inning off of Pedro Strop, then in the 9th he hit the walk-off double off Mike Montgomery. Carlos Martinez was selected for his first career opening day start and pitched very well only giving up 6 hits over 7 and a third shutout innings. The game took an interesting turn when closer Seung Hwan Oh gave up a game tying 3-run homer in 9th to Wilson Contreras with one out. But in the bottom half of the inning, Grichuk laced a double into the left center gap to score Jose Martinez from second who hit a leadoff double in the inning. This game has not set the tone for either team as the Cardinals are 2-5 and the Cubs are 5-2. The World Series banner was raised last night.
