Vietnam

(American soldiers on a patrol.)
A lot of people will never know what it's like to see people blown up into bloody, tangled messes or see their best friends die right in front of them. Most people do not know what it is like to come home and not be appreciated for a single thing they did for their country-- to come home to stupid peace protests and be yelled at for going to do something most people don't have the guts to do.  Men of all ages were drafted to fight a war that everyone was confused on the reason. We fought the war in Vietnam for 19 years, 5 months, 4 weeks and 1 day.
( American soldiers during a firefight.)
Within that time frame, we lost over 282,000 Americans. Many people would ask why so many Americans died for a war we never should've even been in. The average lifespan of an American soldier was a month or so. Several of the KIA’s were no older than 19. In Vietnam many Americans didn’t care if they lived or died. They just cared about clearing out the jungles full of Viet Cong. In Vietnam they measured victory in body count because Vietnam was not like other wars where you measured victory by land gained. When you conquered a piece of land in Vietnam, it was most likely taken back by the enemy in less than a day. Fighting in Vietnam could differ from day to day. One day you could be using your gun to fight, and then in a matter of minutes, you were in hand and hand combat fighting for your life. Once we pulled out of Vietnam, we left the war to the South Vietnamese. (We were helping fight the war with them). Once we left. the South Vietnamese slowly ran out of gas, ammunition, and the will to fight. So they were invaded by the NVA and the Viet Cong. Many people think the United States lost the war in Vietnam, but it was the South Vietnamese who lost the war. ~ Dylan Painter and Cody Williamson
