On this day, January 27, in 1888 the National Geographic society was founded in Washington, D.C. The 33 men who originally met and formed the National Geographic Society were a diverse group of geographers, explorers, teachers, lawyers, cartographers,and financiers. All these people shared a interest in scientific and geographical knowledge as well as an opinion that in a time of discovery, invention and change. Nine months after the society was made they published its first issue of NGM but the readers did not grow until another editor took over in 1899. - Kaevyn Spencer
