Chesapeake Bay Retrievers

The Chesapeake Bay Retriever is a fairly large dog breed that originated here in the U.S. This breed’s physical characteristics are specifically designed to walk, run, or swim efficiently. They have long cheekbones, and very strong jaws efficient for carrying large game birds with ease. Their double layered coat consists of a short, harsh, wavy outer coat; and a dense, fine, wooly, containing an abundance of natural oil, and is well dressed for icy weather. The “Chessie” as some like to call this breed, is a very intelligent, brave, and obedient dog breed, making them great hunting companions. They have a passion for water, swimming and retrieving. Male Chesapeake Bay Retrievers range in height from 23- 26 inches; as females range from about 21- 24 inches in height. Males can weigh anywhere from 60- 80 lbs. ; where females weigh anywhere from 55- 70 lbs. Chesapeake Bay Retrievers are prone to hip dysplasia due to their athletic style of play. These dogs need large amounts of exercise, swimming if possible. These dogs tend to act disobedient with absence of exercise due to their bottled up energy and boredom. ~ Jacob Meeks
