The Queen’s asteroid

Freddie Mercury, the lead singer of the band Queen, once sang: “I’m a shooting star leaping through the sky.” But now, in his memory he recently received an asteroid named after him. The International Astronomical Union changed 1991 FM3 to 17473 Freddiemercury in memory of the British singer, who died in 1991. This asteroid was discovered the same year that he died, and the name was changed one day before what would have been his 70th birthday. It is in the Asteroid Belt between Mars and Jupiter and is 3.4 kilometers wide. -Emily Diamond
