St. Patrick's Day Fun Facts

  • The color green became associated with St. Patrick’s Day when it was linked to the Irish independence movement in the late 18th century.
  • Saint Patrick introduced Christianity to Ireland in the year 432.
  • New York City has a Saint Patrick’s Day Parade that is one of the world’s largest parades.
  • St. Patrick’s Day used to be a strictly religious holiday, so they closed all the pubs around the nation every March 17. However, in 1970, it became a holiday known for drinking.
  • Shamrocks are a part of St. Patrick’s Day because Saint Patrick used a shamrock as a metaphor for the Holy Trinity when he introduced Christianity to Ireland.
  • A 2012 estimated that $245 million was spent on beer for St. Patrick’s Day.
