Are you on your phone constantly checking social media or texting? Do you feel like you cannot leave home without it? If so, you might be addicted to your phone, and you’re not the only one.
Smartphone addiction is a growing problem. A 2012 survey by the Pew Research Center found that 46% of all American adults own a smartphone. Since then, the percentage has grown to an even bigger amount. Leslie Perlow, PhD, a professor at the Harvard Business School did a study with 1,600 managers and professionals. She found that 70% said they check it within an hour of getting up, 56% check their phone within an hour of going to sleep, 48% check it over the weekend, and 51% check it constantly when they are on vacation. Also, 44% said they would feel extremely anxious if they lost their phone and were not able to replace it for a week.
The recent escalation in smartphone use has posed the question, “Why?” It seems as if there’s a gravitational pull toward your phone. What is it that makes them so appealing? Many people believe it is because of the technology. It is so easy for people to take out their phone and have access to anything on the internet. However, some people do not believe it is an addiction at all. What do you think?
