National FFA Week

Article by: Madison Hopkins and Landon Scott

Future Farmers of America is the largest student led organization in the world. As we celebrate National FFA week, we think it is important to know a little of the background information. FFA was founded in 1928 by 13 student farmers. This very well known organization holds some 610,240 members in 7,665 chapters throughout all 50 states, including Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands. It wasn't until the year of 1969 that women gained the right to join this wonderful club. In the present time women actually make up more than 45% of all FFA members and approximately half of state leadership positions. The FFA motto is to make a positive difference in the lives of students by developing their potential for premier leadership, personal growth and career success through agricultural education. This week will include lots of different ways to support, celebrate, and promote FFA. Here at Westside we will be hosting an ice cream sundae bar for our wonderful teachers! The officer team (Dakota Crabtree, Landon Scott, Dustin Nichols, Madison Hopkins, and Jessica Baker) will be on the radio talking about Westside FFA on Wednesday, February 24, 2015. Thursday's events will consist of a presentation for the elementary school informing them on how Agriculture affects them directly and how they should consider joining FFA when they get in high school. Shortly after that, we will be assisting Tractor Supply Company is promoting National FFA week! Last but not least, Friday’s events will consist of a cookout for all FFA members who have paid their dues (during lunch). Everyone come and enjoy hamburgers
with us!
